Welcome to the
Todmorden Unitarian Church website.
The Church is a Grade I listed building owned by the
Historic Chapels Trust and maintained jointly
by a local management committee comprised of Todmorden
residents. People wishing to visit the church to view
the interior can currently make an appointment by
telephoning Wes Paul
on 07806 775 639.
Following its closure as a place of worship in 1987, the
church fell into disrepair and suffered both vandalism
and decay. Its acquisition by the
Historic Chapels Trust
in 1994 and significant financial investment in
its repair and renovation, in great part thanks to the
Heritage Lottery Fund,
has restored the church to its former glory.
The Church is now available for hire for a variety of
events

The Church was built between 1865-69 in memory of
John Fielden (1784-1849), a wealthy philanthropist, cotton
manufacturer, Member of Parliament and resident of
Todmorden. It is a fantastically grand example of
Victorian Gothic Church architecture, nestled amongst
beautiful moorland scenery in the Pennine Town of
Todmorden. Further information on the development and

The Historic
Chapels Trust have recently published a survey of the
graves in the church grounds. A plan of the graveyard
layout, together with full text of the legible
engravings on each gravestone, are available to view in
